United Nations Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Before Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to a United States-backed measure ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his presidential meeting the following week.

He became transitional president subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

He had been subject to global penalties as the leader of the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to the extremist organization. America delisted the group from its registry of international terrorist organizations in July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Minister Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, stating online: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and supportive states for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit at the start of the week occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump remarked the Syrian leader had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The pair met initially in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia on a tour of the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria before he cut connections during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting does not represent the president's debut journey to America this year. This past fall, he became the initial Syrian president to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

During his address, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
