Student Society President-Elect Removed Due to Conservative Activist Comments
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after losing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against the student leader reached the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after the student reportedly posted messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a university in the United States.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, the student claimed that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the society on a related program broadcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the assassination of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had previously criticized the student's remarks after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with the activist at the union in spring.
