Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
