Major Internet Outage Hits Many Sites and Mobile Apps
An extensive online failure has disrupted numerous online platforms and applications worldwide, with users noting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the web hosting platform.
The impacted platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-managed operations such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring security home security firm.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of issues reaching the HMRC website on that morning. Additionally in Britain, several Ring users turned to social media to complain their home gadgets were malfunctioning.
Just within Britain, accounts of issues on individual platforms ran into the many thousands for each app.
The company stated that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the America at AWS, a unit that provides essential web infrastructure for many companies, who rent out space on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the most extensive web hosting system.
Just after late night (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), the company announced “higher failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The cascading impact was seen to hit platforms globally, and the problem monitoring service indicating issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors internet outages, also reported a rise in problems on Monday morning, and numerous instances located in Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where officials confirmed the outage began.
